Summary
Plaque dedicated to the valiant soldiers of the 82nd Armored Reconnaissance Battalion of the 2nd Armored Division who died for the liberation of the village.
The war memorial commemorates the people of Samrée who died as a result of the Great War and the Second World War.
Next to the war memorial, a sign on the wall commemorates the 82nd Armoured Reconnaissance Battalion, which fought in and around Samrée during the Battle of the Bulge. Four soldiers from the battalion are particularly honoured: John T. Graham, Everett W. Christensen, Isaac Suhon and John McMahon.
At the start of the Battle of the Bulge, the American 7th Armoured Division set up a food, fuel and ammunition depot at Samrée. The 116th German Panzer Division ‘Windhund’ took over the depot on 20 December 1944. In January 1945, the 2nd Division took over the depot after a few days of fighting.
