Summary
It was built in 1627 by Sire Jean de Herlenval, cavalry captain to the Duke of Alba, and is dedicated to Saint-Hubert.
This rectangular, two-bay schist building is topped by an octagonal bell tower. Note the cross on the bell tower, adorned with a crozier and a key. Beautiful furnishings are still preserved inside the chapel. Altar with baroque altarpiece (17th century) featuring Saint-Hubert and, on the pediment, the Virgin’s swoon, fragment of altarpiece (16th century), tabernacle, bench and statues of Saint-Eloi and Saint-Joseph.
In 1829, Jacques Lambet, Ortho’s parish priest and owner of the chapel, bequeathed it to the villagers. The chapel was restored in 1969 to mark its 350th anniversary. The chapel was also immortalized by local poet Odon Fabry, who wrote a poem in Walloon in 1976.
